Dick Enberg

Never one to be afraid of voicing my displeasure regarding things, I guess I'll finally jump on the "I'm not a huge fan of the Dick Enberg experiment (SO FAR) and I'm going to write about it on my blog" train. Our good buddy Mike at Avenging Jack Murphy has been keeping up on Enberg all season. The readers of Gaslamp Ball have let it be known in numerous Fan Shots. Even Daniel from Friar Forecast has complained that there are to many Padres announcers and that they should consolidate and form into one giant "Super Announcer". But I kept holding off on writing about it....TIL NOW!!! Now before I start off, I'd like to say that I have the utmost respect for Mr. Enberg. He's hands down a legend in broadcasting and I'm not calling for his head on a platter here. I just have some issues with the situation as a whole and wanted to voice my concern.

Here's the thing with Enberg..... Yes, he's a broadcasting icon. Yes, I have to admit the first week when I watched Padres games on TV it almost had a playoff type vibe to it and I thought it was pretty cool. Yes, I also thought the Ted Williams stories he told were amazing. But there are some things that get to me. On the subject of his hiring, a Padres insider told me that Steve Quis actually found out about Enberg's hiring (not to mention basically Quis being out of a job) by reading it in the newspaper. Ouch....talk about being handled poorly. If Quis was in that boat then I almost have to assume that the same happened to Mark Neely. I know it's a business and all, but shouldn't they have at least informed the other announcers that they were looking to go in another direction? A misconception that people have been having a lot lately, is they assume Enberg is here for only 1 year. I personally have read it so many times on various blogs that I began to think that was the case too. But I started thinking about it and swore he signed a multi-year deal. I looked back and he did indeed sign a multi-year (3) deal. Rumor has it that it was for a whopping 1.4 million over those 3 years too. That's roughly 467,000 per year. To put that amount into perspective: that's more than Kyle Blanks, Everth Cabrera, Sean Gallagher, Luke Gregerson, Tony Gwynn Jr., Chase Headley, Nick Hundley, Mat Latos, Edward Mujica, Cesar Ramos, Clayton Richard, Oscar Salazar, Tim Stauffer, Joe Thatcher & Will Venable are making this season. Yes, one of our broadcasters is making more this season than 60% of the opening day roster. Oh my??

Now for all the people swearing off Channel 4 for hiring Enberg let me tell you this....Channel 4 had very little, if anything, to do with his hiring. Padres President Tom Garfinkel orchestrated this whole thing. Being a guy who never thinks inside the box, Garfinkel shot for the moon while having breakfast with Enberg one fine day in San Diego and asked him if he'd be interested in joining the Padres booth. I like where he was going with this idea, but much like Beerfest it has fallen far short of expectations. Padres fans are angry with Enberg for "rooting" for other teams. I personally think years and years of working for a network has killed any hometown bias he ever had. He hasn't worked consistently for an MLB team since 1978 (he worked for the Angels from 1969-1978 & also in 1985 for one season). I'm perfectly OK with a non-biased announcer, but at the same time I think a lot of people mainly have a problem with him sounding excited when the other team hits a walk off or a crushing blow late in the game. You can be non-biased but you absolutely can't sound like you are rooting for the other team. One other big problem the fans are having is the constant name flubs. Being that he hasn't called an MLB game since 1982 and after missing all of Spring Training, perhaps this is still his Spring Training. But at the same time you can't be getting a players names wrong time and time again.....especially when they are a part of the team that you've been calling games for all season long. I've personally seen Ted Leitner, Jerry Coleman, Andy Masur & Mark Grant studying over media guides and rosters for the day, way before the gametime. I assume Enberg does this too, but how come he can't get the names right and everyone else can?

Like I said before, I'm not calling for his head on a platter and some of my issues regarding his hiring have very little to do with him (IE:hiring process). But at the same time when things aren't up to par you look at fixing or improving those issues. Hopefully Enberg can make these adjustments to make the viewing more enjoyable for all the Padres fans. Oh yeah, also so us bloggers don't have to write anything negative about him anymore too.

Power Rankings Galore!!

Written by SDPads1 on .

First of all if you haven't done so yet get your entries in for the viagogo/RJ's Fro contest. We already have tons of entries but I just wanted to send out that reminder again in case you missed it!

Now onto the Power Rankings!! The Bloguin baseball bloggers (that's a lot of B's) put together our most recent MLB power rankings. If you missed the guidelines last time I posted it, all the Bloguin baseball blogs turn in their list of all 30 teams ranked where they see fit. Averages are added up and BAM you got the Power Rankings. I got mine turned in minutes before the deadline so I actually forgot to write my picks down, but I do remember where I put the Padres. I had them coming in at 6th place overall....which was ahead of where I had the Giants, whom they have a better overall record than and also hold a 7-1 series lead over. Yet for the 3rd straight time the Giants come in ranked higher than the Padres. A part of me wanted to rank the Padres first just because I know they are going to get no respect elsewhere, but alas I entered my rankings exactly how I thought they should be and played on the up and up. At least the Padres weren't dogged in other teams comments like last time.

Wait....that's not enough Power Rankings for you?? Well how about some Breakfast Burrito Power Rankings too? I have more that I have eaten and need to add to this soon, but I'm tired of putting this off, so for now check this list out.....AFTER THE JUMP.

Burrell to the Padres?

Written by Beautown on .

pat-burrell-226x300That's right!  Pat Burrell to the Padres.  Now, before I get shot down because of his lack of offensive production with the Rays and his mockery of defending the left field position, lets look at some possibilities.  First of all, our current outfielders are:

Tony Gwynn Jr. - .182, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 8 SB, 19 SO
Will Venable - .248, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 11 SB, 41 SO
Chris Denorfia - .375, 1 RBI, 1 SO
Kyle Blanks - .157, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 1 SB, 46 SO
Scott Hairston (DL) - .247, 6 HR, 14 RBI, 3 SB, 24 SO

with special guest appearances by non-starters
Oscar Salazar - .195, 1 RBI, 1 SB, 9 SO
Jerry Hairston Jr. - .221, 12 RBI, 4 SB, 12 SO
Matt Stairs - .172, 4 RBI, 1 SB, 12 SO

And before Venable's 4-for-5 strong performance last night against the Dodgers he was batting .223.  The offensive production from our outfield is pretty much nonexistant.  Jed Hoyer has put a plan in place to
bring in players who can hit it out of the ballpark or use an elemnt of speed and athleticism that works in favor of PETCO Park.  Purchasing the contract of Chris Denorfia is step one in the right direction.  He fills the role of Scott Hairston while Scotty is on the DL and makes things happen with scrappy play, good hitting, and solid outfield defense.  The next step is our left field situation.  In my opinion, Salazar, Hairston Jr., and Stairs need to stay in their bench/utility roles.  They are not starters and give us versatility on these long stretches of games.  With Blanks having a sore elbow, striking out at a pace Mark Reynolds would be proud of, and just flat out not looking comfortable at the plate, either a stint on the DL or being optioned to Portland to get that swing back seems to be the smart move for our future bopper.

That leaves an opening in the outfield and while staying in house and calling up Luis Durango would be my first option, there are a couple of free agent outfielders with some pop who are available right now.  The first one is Jermaine Dye.  Right away, the problem I have with Dye is that he is going to cost some money and probably not be ready to go for a few weeks since he has had no real "spring training" this year.  Do we have time to wait for that and will Moorad open the wallet in the middle of May?  I don't think so.  Another suggestion is Pat Burrell.  Recently released by the Tampa Bay Rays, he just cleared waivers and can be had for $300,000.  According to MLBTradeRumors, the Phillies are not interested at this time.  So, what if we signed him, started him in left, bat him fourth behind Adrian.  One, he's affordable.  Two, since the beginning of 2007 he has hit .241 with 79 HR and 260 RBI.  Three, he would return to the National League where he is more familiar with the ballparks and pitching. Four, he gives us a power threat in the lineup to balance out the speed.

I know it would be a bold move, but for the price and what seems to be the plan to give Durango more experience in AAA, Pat Burrell kind of makes some sense for our team right now.   Just a thought...
