It's been a while since I've done one of these full fledged post things. Last season, I tried to keep things on the down low due to working at a TV station with close ties to the Padres, that may or may not have a "Cooking Guy" on it, that may also be one of the top 5 numbered stations for Cox subscribers....OK, OK it was KUSI (just kidding). My thinking was that you can't get in trouble for not writing anything at all, right? If only it was that easy. But that's another post all together.
The point of THIS post is that tonight there will be a "casual meetup of Padres fans" that will "just so happen to be crashed" by one Mr. "Mat Latos" & a Mrs. "Dallas Latos". It'll be at the Fro's favorite place the Randy Jones All American Sports Grill at 7:30pm. I'm going to try and make it & if I do, I'll bring all the #balls shirts remaining (not many) & will have them at rock bottom prices!! (Buy me a beer? 5 bucks?) I think it's a Friarhood event, but I could be wrong. I once ran into Steve at H & R Block during tax time while he was getting his taxes done and there were Friarhood banners everywhere. Dude loves him some events.
It brings a tear to my eye as it's the end of the #balls era here in San Diego. What are #balls you ask? Well first of all how dare you ask such a stupid question! Second of all, if I'm going to explain it then we are going to have to take a trip allllllllll the way back to the year 2011. Ownership in San Diego was uncertain, the Padres were trying to cram ugly uniform changes down our throats and San Diegans were clamoring over breakfast. Wait...not much has changed apparently.

The night before I was sent a tweet by American Icon Autographs letting me know about a set of baseballs that Mat Latos signed "I hate SF!". I thought it was hilarious so I did a quick write up on it....
The geniuses of American Icon Autographs are now auctioning off the coolest Mat Latos autograph known to man.....the "I hate SF!" ball. That's right ladies and gentleman...I. Hate. SF. (to all of you Giant fans reading this I know you're a little slow, so the SF stands for San Francisco) He inscribed 3 baseballs with the phrase on January 13th, 2011 at the AIA store and according to the eBay description it is "in the spirit of friendly competition with the Padres NL West rivals the San Francisco Giants". They are available now on eBay at $299.99 (or best offer) and comes with a Letter of Authenticity with 50% of the proceeds going to the MLB Players Alumni Association. If I had an extra 300 bucks lying around, I'd swoop this up in a heart beat.
This sent most Giants fans into little hissy fits. They told their moms on me, I was sent threats of hair pulling, the comments section was hijacked by Giants fans calling me poophead and all hell broke loose. Which led me to another write up the very next day and the birth of a bet.
Since my post last night, not only has the site received a flurry of traffic, but Scott & BR talked about the balls on air, I invented a new hashtag on Twitter (#balls), Giants fans and bloggers have gone on the attack against not only Mat, but myself as well, LobShots reignited the inferno this morning, Big League Stew wrote up a piece on it and 2 of all 3 of the balls were sold! One of which was by Twitter follower San Diego Josh that he will sell again at some point with the proceeds going to charity.
Honestly people, it's not that big of a deal. Like I stated before, it's all in good fun and some of the money is going towards a good cause.
With that said, I'd like to place a friendly wager on the season series with Splashing Pumpkins on the 2011 season series between the Padres and Giants. You come up with something that San Francisco is known for (excluding weed, hippies, hacky sacks & tie dye shirts) and I'll come up with something San Diego and we'll ship it off. Or we could always go the "Wear my teams hat or shirt" route. What do you say?
Never one to just sit back and enjoy the ride, I decided to stir the pot a little more with one more post that same night and created 2 signs & a t-shirt that I envisioned every Padres fan holding up or wearing during the playoff run of 2011.
As all of you already know by now, the #balls craze is taking over Padreland. It's been the 2nd-3rd ranked trending topic in San Diego all day long. Avenging Jack Murphy and myself were discussing it earlier today and we were asking ourselves what could be a better slogan for the 2011 season than #balls? I'll tell you what...nothing. So I went to the drawing board to come up with some things that will surely be a hit this season with the fans. Throwback colors..CHECK. Some catch phrases...CHECK. #balls....CHECK & DOUBLE CHECK. So here are 2 mini banners & a shirt, all of which are on it's way to the printers and will be done in time for the home opener where I expect to see lots of #balls signs and t-shirts :)

OK well I'm still waiting for that playoff run of 2011 but that my friends, is the birth of #balls. But our story doesn't end there. Stay tuned for another post in which I had one of the #balls in my grasp. I had nothing but #balls on my mind. The #balls were so close I could taste it. But I was robbed of a season of #balls & I wasn't happy about it.
