Beerfest came and went. Before the event I was super hyped for it. I was excited to see one of the hottest teams in baseball (the Padres in case you didn't notice), I was excited to be able to sample various local breweries in San Diego & I was extremely excited to see the Broken Lizard guys. And in the end I only got to expieriance one of those three things. But that's OK, I still had fun!
After getting there at 5:20 I could barely contain my excitement and began running over to the beer gardens. Suddenly, I slammed on the breaks and realized that there was an enourmous line wrapped around the tents. So I went and waited in line. Once inside, I imediately had to slam on the breaks again because there was absolutely no where to go. That place was packed so tight, I'm pretty sure I lost my virginity a couple times that night. After not even recieving any phone numbers in return, I noticed that a good portion of the beer tents were closed down already too and began to ask around. I was told that all these places ran out of beer already. How can that be....it's only 20 minutes after first pour?!?! Now I know San Diego likes beer (almost as much as breakfast according to Men's Journal) but this is ridiculous! Finally I decided to skip said Beer Garden. I'm not going to risk waiting in line forever only to get to the front of the line and have them tell me they were sold out. So I ventured off to look for the Broken Lizard guys.
After searching for a bit, I found the Broken Lizard tent. After pulling out my binoculars to see the end of the line, I decided to pass on meeting them too. But we did sneak up to the front of the line and get some pictures! 4 out of the 5 members showed up with Jay Chandrasekhar being the only one missing.

Apparently around this time, Padres President Tom Garfinkel got on stage and apologized to the crowd. I personally didn't see it, but I asked him after the event how he thought things went. He said that it was a "huge success" but they "definitely underestimated the size of the crowd". Not one to take this laying down, the mighty Garfinkel proclaimed that "we'll be ready next time with more room, more displays and a lot more beer!" I personally like the sound of that and unlike some other clubs that make promises like this, I truely believe they will be ready next time. One other bit of advice would be to sell beer tickets outside the booths that way the booths themselves don't have to worry about having change available and just have to worry about serving beer.
Finally I headed to my seat over in the Friarhood section. Steve, as always, did a great job throwing this event together and even had over 200 people attend! If you haven't been to one of his events then you are missing out. I actually ended up sitting with fellow bloggers Avenging Jack Murphy & The Sacrifice Bunt. We discussed the early teachings of Socrates. Melvin felt that Socrates was an enigmatic genius who was well ahead of his time. The Avenger in Chief on the other hand felt that he was greatly overrated, and that Plato had a longer lasting impact on the culture we live in today. While discussing this we witnessed one of the "most exciting teams in baseball" thrash the Brewers 3-0. It was a great night, despite having to wait in all the lines, and I fully expect the next time to be even better.
