Padres Public Plans a Takeover of Fox Sports San Diego

Written by SDPads1 on .

It’s going to be a big week  for Padres Public next week. 7 of the 13 members of the group will be heading out to Peoria for some Spring Training action and with that will come a ton of pictures, analysis, scouting, videos and there will be very little bobblehead talk (sorry). We also have a bunch of special things planned during our time out there. Make sure you follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram & Google+. We’ll be incorporating all of those things into our week.

The first thing, that I can announce, is 4 of us, in addition to Brady from Lobshots, will be “taking over Fox Sports San Diego” for the game on Wednesday the 13th against the Angels. The plan is to sit in on innings 5 and 7. The ideas are still flowing among us and we really don’t know all of the details yet, but it is sure to be a great time. Here is the Fox Sports San Diego Press Release.

The Reason Mickelson bailed on Padres Ownership

Written by SDPads1 on .

Last year, Mickelson flirted with becoming a part-owner of the San Diego Padres franchise, which sold for $800 million in August. He was asked Sunday whether there was a correlation between the tax increases and what happened to the Padres' deal.

"Absolutely," Mickelson said.

In November of 2012 Prop 30 was passed in the State of California. It was one of the first tax rate hikes in years and it passed by over 10%. The people were lead to believe that it would all go towards education and mainly the upper class would be the one taking a hit.  Well rumor has it the schools are going to get shortchanged and fellow San Diegan Phil Mickelson is in that upper class and has been hit hard by it. So hard in fact, that it caused him to pass on the Padres ownership spot and a move out of California could be in the cards.

After being silent and given no explanation, it's interesting to hear the real reason why Mickelson bailed on the ownership spot. It also makes one wonder if the group was relying on Phil's money when they bought the team. He stated that he was going to be a significant contributor and would play a part in the day to day operations. Is that a reason for the non-existent Padres off-season? Le sigh....the life of a Padres fan.

Miggy's Triple Crown

Written by FISH on .

It took 45 years, and thousands of baseball moments, but on last night on regular season baseball for the 2012 , Miguel Cabrera of the Detriot Tigers won the Triple Crown leading the American League in homeruns, RBI's, and batting average. The last player to win the coveted honor was Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 while leading the Boston Red Sox to the World Series in the same year.  Cabrera lead his Tigers to the playoffs winning the American League Central Division, then the ALCS, only to lose to the Giants in the World Series.

Cabrera is only the 15th player in baseball history to hit for the Triple Crown. His name will forever be listed to the likes of Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, and Lou Gehrig to name a few. That's pretty good company.  In a quote from Cabrera he thanked GOD for giving him the chance to complete this, and sited it as a “dream come true.”

Why has it taken 45 years for anybody to complete this task? Good question. With some of the biggest names in baseball coming close, but never quite reaching the milestone. As we already know close is only good in horseshoes and hand grenades.  Even during the “Steroid Era” when baseball's offensive number we at all-time high in all categories, not one player could hit for the Triple Crown. That makes what Cabrera did this season even more memorable.

The closest player to the crown was Albert Pujols in 2009 whose batting average and RBI's tapered off at the end of the season.  The moment was so special that even the opposing team, the home team in this case the Kansas City Royals, gave Miggy (Cabrera's nickname) a standing ovation. Keep in mind this is the same crowd that booed Robinson Cano during the All-Star game's Homerun Derby. Again, that explains the magnitude of Miggy's accomplishment.

Now a couple of questions come into play. The first being will Cabrera's terrific season lead the Tigers to the World Series or better yet to win the big show? Okay that was two questions. Secondly, will Cabrera be named the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) over rookie Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels?  And finally, even if all the above happens or not, will this be Cabrera's legacy? It very well could be, and there is nothing wrong with that.

According to Pro Rumors' Juan Dominguez, former Padre Enzo Hernandez has passed away today at the age of 62 in his native Venezuela.

The shortstop spent parts of 7 seasons with the Padres from 1971-1977 and finished his career with the Dodgers in 1978. The speedster ranks 7th on the Padres all-time Stolen Base list with 129 steals.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family & friends.

New Hat Idea

Written by Beautown on .

I know alot of people were disappointed with the new uniforms last year.  But, I was in the minority and thought they were not too bad at all, especially if they keep them for a while and establish the look.  As I was looking for some Christmas present ideas in the Padres store, I saw a New Era hat that I think the Padres should adopt as their new road hats.   It is the Gray 2 Tone basic hat here:

So the home uniforms stay the same with the standard blue hat, and the road grays would use the gray hat.  I also think the navy alternate jersey should have a gray "SD" and gray piping when used on the road.  Do those changes and I'm all set.  As for the rest of San Diego, good luck making them happy!

You can buy the hat HERE

I've Got a Flair...for Willie Blair

Written by Beautown on .

The Padres recently just added Willie Blair to the coaching staff.  Now, I really don't have a "flair", but it is good to see the Padres keep ex-players in the coaching ranks.  I also love the band Fountains of Wayne, so the announcemet, for some reason, made me think of their song "I've Got A Flair".   Anyway, it also brings back fond memories of that great 1996 season as Blair was part of the dominating bullpen anchored by Trevor Hoffman.  I think he will be a good fit to take over as bullpen coach.  Welcome back to San Diego Willie!

PadSquadnam Style!!

Written by SDPads1 on .

psyWhen it comes to the amount of love for the Pad Squad, I probably rank a distant 2nd behind jbox of Gaslamp Ball on the Love-O-Meter. Dude loves him some Pad Squad and the Pad Squad also loves them some jbox. But that gap might have closed a bit after this video because there's no way he loves this thing more than me. Check out this video of them dancing to Gangnam Style. I've been obsessed with this song & video and I'm sad I missed it in person, but I'm glad their video is now up. Enjoy!!!
